Duduk

CONTENTS

In the club, students will be introduced to the history of the creation of the duduk—a traditional Armenian wind instrument—whose music was proclaimed by UNESCO in 2005 as one of the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. During the courses, students will become familiar with the features of Armenian folk musical culture. Emphasis is placed on the heritage left by master Armenian duduk players, for whom a unique approach to study is developed. Students will learn the performance skills of works written specifically for the instrument by composers creating in various styles, which will develop their aesthetic and musical taste. Instruction will be provided on how a duduk ensemble can correctly and competently perform accompanied by a choir and other folk instruments.

Performances at various events will foster respect for the art of great masters and the instrument itself, as well as stage ethics and performance technique.

FORMS OF INSTRUCTION

The program is implemented through a combination of theoretical and practical classes. Individual work is conducted with each student; after fully mastering the instrument, work continues in a group. Lip and finger exercises, often performed to faster rhythmic music, are carried out through special games. Work is conducted towards mastering stage posture and ethical norms. During their time attending the club, students demonstrate the knowledge and skills they have acquired during concerts and various educational and cultural events.

EXPECTED OUTCOMES

Within the framework of the program, learners must:

  • Master the nuances of the instrument and the art of performance,

  • Observe the rules for the proper use of the instrument,

  • Be able to skillfully play the duduk,

  • Retain the acquired relevant musical knowledge and actively participate in contests-festivals.
