On April 17, an international open championship dedicated to M. Oyama, the founder of Kyokushinkai Karate, entitled the “Oyama Cup,” was held at the Gyumri Specialized Sambo-Judo Sports School.

More than 100 athletes from Kazakhstan, Georgia, Javakhk, and various regions of Armenia participated in the championship.

The students of the Martial Arts group of Gyumri’s “Yntaniq” Children and Youth Creative Center also achieved notable results in this field. Eight students from the Center won prizes at the tournament. In different age and weight categories, three students became silver medalists, taking second place, while five students became bronze medalists, taking third place. The participants were also awarded certificates of merit.

The students of the Center dedicated their victories to the border-guard soldiers, wishing them strength, resilience, and unwavering determination.

The tournament aimed to identify the best athletes who would have the opportunity to participate in the European and World Championships.

Sargis Vardanyan, instructor of the Martial Arts group at the Gyumri “Yntaniq” Center and a first-dan black belt in Kyokushinkai Karate-do, was appointed as the chief referee of the tournament.

At the conclusion of the tournament, S. Vardanyan received an invitation from the President of the Georgian Kyokushinkai Karate-do Federation to serve as the chief referee at the Caucasus Championship to be held in Georgia the following year.
